Monthly Balance Tips - July

Hi everyone,

By July, summer is no longer arriving…it has arrived.

The days are long, the temperatures are high, and for many of us, life feels busy. Vacations, family activities, outdoor events, and longer daylight hours can make it tempting to keep pushing from morning until night.

Ayurveda reminds us that while summer often feels energizing, it can also be quietly depleting. The same heat that encourages activity can slowly drain our reserves if we aren't paying attention.

In Ayurveda, July is firmly within Pitta season. The qualities of heat, intensity, sharpness, and transformation are at their strongest. We often think of heat as energy, but Ayurveda teaches that excessive heat can eventually weaken the body if it isn't balanced.

This is the month to enjoy summer while also respecting its intensity. The goal isn't to slow down completely - it's to stay cool enough that you can continue enjoying the season without burning yourself out.

Traditional Ayurveda encourages us to balance heat with foods, activities, and routines that are cooling, calming, and nourishing.

What's Happening

In July, people often see characteristics of elevated pitta:

  • Feeling easily overheated

  • Increased irritability or impatience

  • More inflammation, skin sensitivity, or headaches

  • Strong hunger that quickly turns into feeling "hangry"

  • Difficulty relaxing or falling asleep when nights stay warm

Things Worth Noticing

Summer often asks us to pay attention to the difference between being energized and being overstimulated.

Instead of focusing on productivity, it might be useful to notice:

  • Are you giving yourself enough downtime between activities?

  • Do you feel refreshed after being outside, or drained?

  • Are you reaching for iced drinks because you're thirsty, or because you're overheated?

One Simple Shift for July

Ayurveda has long recommended honoring the rhythm of the season rather than trying to overpower it.

July is a wonderful month to protect the middle of your day when the heat is at its highest.

 If possible:

  • Schedule walks earlier in the morning

  • Exercise during cooler parts of the day

  • Take breaks from direct sun

  • Choose meals that feel fresh, hydrating, and satisfying

Something to Sit With

Instead of asking,

"How can I fit more into my day?"

Try asking:

"What helps me stay cool when life heats up?"

Sometimes balance isn't about doing less. It's about creating enough space to recover between what we do.

What's Coming

August often brings a different challenge. While summer heat remains, signs of late summer dryness begin to appear.

I'll be sharing more about protecting energy, hydration, and preparing for the transition toward fall.

For now, enjoy the sunshine, but don't forget that even the brightest season benefits from a little shade.

Warmly, Sandra
