Ayurveda Tips for October

Hi everyone,

October is when I start noticing how quickly life can get busy.

Here in East Texas, we are finally able to enjoy the Great Outdoors again and we can catch up on all the projects we put off. Fall festivals, football season, and Halloween make the month special to many of us. Before we know it, we're looking toward Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In October, we just get...busy.

And our personal routines can quietly disappear. Meals get pushed around. Bedtime gets later or we get up earlier for travel and we skip the things that help us feel good because there's always something else to do.

So this month, I'm thinking about something wonderfully simple:

Routine

Not a complicated schedule. Just a few things we do regularly that help us feel like ourselves.

A Quick Word About Routine

There is a lot of movement in this season due to an increase in Vata. Space and air's qualities are clearly evident the leaves are falling, the air is cooling, and the daylight is noticeably shorter.

Vata is also associated with movement and the desire to socialize. This is great for the most part. But if not balanced, we can become a bit scattered and overwhelmed. So, when life gets busier and more unpredictable, a little consistency can be grounding.

Your body actually likes knowing what to expect...like regular meals, a reasonably consistent bedtime, moving your body, and taking a little time to settle down at the end of the day.

These things aren't exciting, bu they are surprisingly powerful. What you want is a container, not a rigid rule bound cage.

What Ayurveda Is Paying Attention To Right Now

Dry, light, cold, rough, subtle, and mobile.

These are the qualities that are showing up.

For us, these qualities can mean lightheartedness and lots to do, but they may also mean dry or roughened skin, a bit of forgetfulness, constipation, or restlessness.

We simply need to balance a bit to keep them manageable.

Things Worth Noticing

This month, simply notice:

  • Are you eating at roughly the same times each day?

  • Has your bedtime started creeping later?

  • Are you feeling a bit overwhelmed?

  • What simple routine makes you feel better when you actually do it?

One Simple Shift

Pick one thing.

Not five.

Choose one small routine you'd like to bring back this month and make it easy enough that you'll actually do it.

Now that the weather is a bit cooler, perhaps a walk outside may be your one small thing - noticing the color of the leaves, the sky, the feel of the ground under your feet.

Something to Sit With

What is one small thing change that would make my days feel a little better?

Spend some extra time in the shower rather than rushing?

Sit down for a lunch rather than eating while standing at the counter or in the car?

Drink your favorite morning beverage outdoors rather than inside?

Sometimes wellness really is that simple.

What's Coming

November brings cooler days, cozy meals, Thanksgiving gatherings, and that unmistakable feeling that the year is winding down.

We'll slow down a little and make room for the things this month is really about: good food, good company, gratitude, and taking care of ourselves in the middle of it all.
