Ayurveda Tips for November

Hi everyone,

November brings cooler weather, family gatherings, and, of course, Thanksgiving.

Here in East Texas, the pace of life can change quickly this time of year. The weather gets cooler, the days get shorter, and the calendar starts filing up with football games, holiday events, family gatherings, and all the things that seem to happen between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It is a fun time of year, but it can also be a little scattered.

A Quick Word About Vata

As we move deeper into fall, certain qualities become more noticeable. The air is cooler and drier, the days are shorter, and there is a lot of movement.

In Ayurveda, there is a part of us (called Vata) that responds to movement. Too much activity can leave us feeling scattered, restless, forgetful, or simply tired.

The Ayurvedic answer isn't to stop enjoying the season. It is to balance all that movement with a little more warmth, regularity, nourishment, and rest.

Sometimes the best way to balance Vata is simply to slow down.

What Ayurveda Is Paying Attention To Right Now

Cool, dry, light, and mobile.

These are some of the qualities we are working with as we move into November.

We can balance those qualities with their opposites.

Warm food. Regular meals. A little more rest. Familiar routines. Taking time to sit down instead of always being on the move.

Even something as simple as pausing before a meal can help us slow down enough to actually be present.

Things Worth Noticing In November

This month, simply notice:

  • Are you feeling more scattered or rushed than usual?

  • Are your meals becoming less regular as the holiday season gets busier?

  • Are you giving yourself enough time to rest and slow down?

One Simple Shift

Try taking three breaths before one meal a day.

Give yourself a moment to arrive at the table before you begin eating. Look at the food on your plate and observe its texture and aroma.

This is also a lovely place for a little gratitude. Someone grew the food, prepared it, cooked it, or brought it to your table.

Three breaths. A moment of appreciation. Then eat.

It is a very small way to bring a little more warmth and steadiness into a season that can get pretty busy.

Something to Sit With

Where could I slow down a little this month?

Maybe it is before a meal. Maybe it is your morning coffee. Maybe it is the few minutes before bed.

Sometimes balancing Vata doesn't require adding another thing to your day - it can mean doing what you are already doing, just a little more slowly.

What's Coming

December brings even more activity, shorter days, holiday gatherings, and changes to our normal routines.

We'll continue looking at ways to work with the season rather than fighting against it, with a little more attention to staying grounded and making room for rest during the holidays.

Warmly, Sandra
