Monthly Balance Tips - August

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd share a little advice for navigating the next month. By August, the long days of summer can start to feel... well, long.

I actually think August is one of the most interesting months in Ayurveda because it's a bridge month. Most wellness advice still treats it like "summer," but Ayurveda recognizes that Pitta is still high while Vata begins quietly accumulating due to the heat, dryness, wind, and depletion of the season.

This makes August a perfect month to start talking about protecting your reserves rather than simply staying cool.  Ayurveda sees August as more than just another hot month. It's a time when the body begins preparing for the next season, even if we don't notice it yet.

A Quick Word About August

August is considered late summer, when the heat of Pitta remains strong, but the dryness of Vata quietly begins to accumulate. Long days, sunshine, travel, irregular schedules, and dehydration can slowly deplete both the body and the nervous system.

You may still feel energetic on the outside while your reserves are gradually running lower. This is why Ayurveda encourages us to enjoy the season while also beginning to replenish what summer has been using up.

 What's Happening

By late summer, it's common to notice signs that the body is asking for a little more care. People often notice:

  • Feeling thirsty more often

  • Dry skin, lips, or hair

  • Less patience or shorter tempers

  • Trouble winding down at night

  • Feeling tired despite getting enough sleep

These are often subtle reminders that heat and dryness are beginning to outweigh the body's natural moisture and stability.  To balance...  gently bringing back nourishment - not heavy winter foods, but enough healthy fats, regular meals, good hydration, and restful routines to prevent depletion.

Things Worth Noticing

Instead of asking how much summer you have left to enjoy, it might be helpful to notice:

  • Have your routines become less consistent?

  • Are you staying hydrated throughout the day, not just when you're thirsty?

  • Do you feel restored after your weekends, or do you need another recovery day?

Sometimes fatigue isn't a sign that you're doing too little. It's a sign you've been giving away more energy than you've been replacing.

One Simple Shift for August

This month, try bringing one routine back home.

Maybe it's eating breakfast at the table instead of on the go.

Maybe it's taking ten quiet minutes before bed.

Maybe it's cooking one simple meal instead of grabbing something convenient.

Small routines tell the nervous system that things are becoming steady again, and that steadiness is one of the best ways to prepare for the transition into fall.

Something to Sit With

Instead of asking,

"How do I squeeze the last bit out of summer?"

Try asking:

"What do I need to replenish before the next season begins?"

Nature never rushes from one season to another, and neither does your body.

What's Coming

September marks the beginning of a very different seasonal shift.

As the air becomes cooler, drier, and windier, Ayurveda turns its attention toward calming the nervous system and supporting Vata. I'll be sharing simple ways to make that transition feel smoother.

Until then, enjoy what's left of summer - but don't forget to refill your own cup along the way.

Warmly, Sandra
