Monthly Balance Tips - April

Hi everyone,

Let's continue learning about each month's possibilities and challenges.

By the time April rolls around, most people are ready to shed the heaviness of the past couple of months.  The days are longer. There's more warmth in the air. Trees and plants are waking up again. After a long winter, it finally feels things are moving forward.

But interestingly, this is also the time when people often feel a little off. They feel heavy, foggy, congested, or strangely tired when they feel they shouldn't. Ayurveda actually expects this.

A Quick Word About April

In Ayurveda, April is when spring really takes hold. The warmth of the season starts to melt the heaviness that built up during winter (even if the winter was mild).  Think about what happens when snow melts and everything that was frozen or contained begins to move. The same thing happens in the body. What winter stored, spring begins to loosen.  The process can feel messy before it feels energizing, which is why allergies, sluggish digestion, and low motivation often show up right about now.

Activity to the Rescue

Gentle yoga, long walks, and fun sports like golf or pickle ball that get you out and moving are great ways to help flush the sludge.  Other alternatives are gardening or even active chores like spring cleaning that help get the blood circulating and clear out the old and welcome the new.  Whatever you do, just know that it will take a bit of time to return to full energy levels, so start with small and stay mindful.

What's Happening

This part of spring is dominated by Kapha qualities of cool, damp, heavy, and slow.

Those qualities are helpful during winter because they build strength and stability. But as the weather warms, too much Kapha can start to feel like stagnation.

People often notice:

  • Feeling heavier or puffier than usual

  • Slower digestion or less appetite

  • Mucus, sinus congestion, or seasonal allergies

  • Mental fog or low motivation

Again, none of this means something is wrong. It simply means the body is in the middle of mobilizing what was stored during winter.

Things Worth Noticing

Instead of trying to "fix" everything, it can be useful to simply notice stuff.

Ask yourself:

  • Are your meals still as heavy as they were in winter?

  • Is your body asking for a little more movement?

  • Are you spending time outside as the weather improves?

Spring is one of those seasons where small adjustments tend to work better than big overhauls.

One Simple Shift for April

April is a great time to lighten things just a little - without dieting or cleansing aggressively.

Shift towards meals that feel a bit lighter and warmer. Bitter greens like collards, turnip or kale are great to pacify Kapha and are simple to add to soups or bowls. Adding more vegetables, simple soups, whole grains, and spices can also help digestion wake back up.

Keeping meals at regular times can also help speed the process, so make sure you eat about the same time for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Something to Sit With

Instead of asking,

“How do I get my energy back?”

Try asking:

“What might my body be trying to clear right now?”

Spring is less about pushing forward and more about making space for what's coming next.

Next -  Late Spring

As we move into late spring, the focus shifts toward supporting digestion, managing seasonal allergies, and keeping energy steady as activity naturally increases.

I'll be sharing more about those shifts soon.

Until then, let the season do some of the work for you.

Warmly, Sandra
